I have no idea, any more than I know why my redbud died. It's been'
a most strange season. Last week we had two hot days and then it
turned cool again. The peonies shot up and bloomed in the heat, and
are almost all gone already - usually the peony season lasts longer.
The worst thing about it is that they grew so fast the stems were very
thin and weak, and couldn't hold up the very heavy blooms. Even the
ones that were inside wire hoops fell right over the supporting hoops.
'Festiva Maxima,' which is usually good for a couple of weeks, has
all bloomed at once and most of the blooms fell over the hoops - some
even broke. My 'Gai Paree' had 28 blooms at once but all were gone
in about three days. Bummer! I was counting on them for a design
program our club is having next week. Oh well. Something else will
One thing that is especially nice this year is the yellow perennial
foxglove, Digitalis ambigua. I know, I know. Some people call it a
weed, but I love it. It grows in the shade, and the deer don't eat it.
The yellow blooms aren't too showy, but a row of them in the shady
border looks like candles. I enjoy a lot of things that people call
weeds. If they are pretty, and I don't need the space for something
else, I let them grow.

Nobody knows I guess...
I haven't seen anything like that before but when I don't see obvious
signs of disease I just wait to see what happens.

Subject: [CHAT] anyone still around.. I got a question
My crimson frost river birch is doing some strange thing... need
what to do...
The bottom 6 ft or so look like it always has, smaller branching with
leaves. The top of the tree doesn't have a leaf on it. None... hada...
riduculas with the trunk, branches and nothing.
So I got a ladder out and it's not dead. Nothing snaps and all the
branches bend etc....
So, what do I do? What's wrong with it? Do I add it to the collection
plants that didn't make it?
I know it was a crazy winter here with so much snow and cold and ice.
spring hasn't been any better. Cold rainy stormy. 2 days ago it was in
50's if lucky... today it is 93...geesh. We have set all kindsa records
lows, highs, and rain amounts. I still haven't even put my veggie
cause of the rain. Still too muddy even in a raised bed to turn over
or anything. Weeds are thriving, lost some plants.
TIA for any suggestions and help...
