You must be patient! Taxonomy is a work in progress. Ben has written a paper which impacts the number of hosta species. Time must be allowed to study this paper. In the meantime, all legal species are in the Kew Index as listed in hostalibrary.org under species. Many of the listed are synonyms, some are not true species and some have been reduced to culta rank. I will sort it out, I promise and I have been working on it for some time. Right now I am going through the galleys for my new book. First things first.

I am a volunteer at the Toledo Botanical Gardens. we have an hosta area

how many species of hosta exist?? We are trying to get as complete a

Please let me be the first to request a copy of your list of Species when
you have it compiled. I do not have the mental capacity to wade through that
mess. I see in todays e-mail where Zonneveld says there are 23 good hostas.
HUMMMN. In the Hosta Library there is a list of 40 compiled by Clyde
Crockett. Following it is a "This is a list of all species and authors"
submitted by Zonneveld. From here, let us go to page 19 and 20 0f the Hosta
Handbook where we have a list of 39 hosta species by Maekawa. On page 21and
22 we find 43 species by W. George Schmid. Which is followed by 16 botanical
varieties or forms? This is followed by 31 species that were reduced to
cultivars. Surely there must be other lists somewhere.
I to, at times, become quite listless. During one on those moments I sorted
out three lists: They are 81 Registered Species, 19 Specie unregistered. and
51 Specie mutations. The list needs to be shook up again and see where each
one might be classified. I have put the job of sorting out the 'Good Species'
The 'Bad Species' etc. on the back burner. Now is the time for those experts
on this subject to step forward and give us their list of species. Come on
now, let us all shine a little light on the subject.
