This year's Great HostaLibrary Photo Contest is starting today, May 16 and
will run through Aug 1, 2006.
While there will be a separate contest to build up the hosta flower content at
the Library later this summer, this contest is just for the plant photos. And
Bob has added a new twist this year.
In an effort to build on the number of photos of registered hostas at the
HostaLibrary,at Bob's suggestion, we have come up with a scale of points to be
given for older registered plants versus fewer points awarded to newer and
Many thanks of course go out to Bob for continuing to build the HostaLibrary.
But this year a great deal of work has been done by Marvin Lemke and Karen
Butner who have gone through the entire Library to come up with a basic list
of photos not at the HostaLibrary of registered plants. We also enlisted the
help of Kevin Walek, Registrar, for a current list of hostas registered up to
and including 2005 registrations. George Schmid and Bill Meyer were consulted
to clear up some confusions and for help with current versus discontinued
names. And since last year's contest Hugo Phillips has added a link to his
database on each library page and access to search his database on the Library
home page. If you have any questions about whether a cultivar is at the
Library under another name, please check the lists at the Library and check
Hugo or Lemke's database before you enter a cultivar. This will greatly help
to cut down on the time needed by those who check everything to be sure items
are listed correctly at the Library.
So ... at the HostaLibrary, you will see a link on the home page for the Hosta
Photo Contest. That link will take you to the contest home page. There you
will see this year's rules. There will also be a list of registered hosta
without a photo at the Library in descending order of point value. Also from
the Main HL page the Library List has been updated as of May 1, 2006. This
list includes both registered and unregistered cultivars already at the
Library. All lists can be printed so you can have them to refer to as you go
garden touring all summer. (Please don't enter any cultivars in the contest
that are already at the Library).
These lists will be valuable tools for anyone who would like to participate in
the contest. They will also be interesting and helpful for anyone who uses the
HostaLibrary as a reference anytime.
(The lists have been made up after pouring over the Library for many dozens of
hours and are as close as we can get them to accurate. The Internet was doing
strange "things" while the lists were being compiled. Plants that were not at
the Library would appear then disappear over the course of nearly 2 weeks. Bob
has noticed this phenomenon from time to time as well and so the lists posted
will be used as the official list, but the decision of the judges will be
final when awarding points.)
Here is a schedule of the points that will be awarded for REGISTERED and
unregistered hostas not already pictured at the HostaLibrary, as Bob first
5 points for any photo of a Hosta not already at the Library Registered prior
3 points for any photo of a Hosta not already at the Library Registered in
1991 through 1995
1 point for any photo of a Hosta not already at the Library Registered in
1996 and later or any unregistered plant.
As Bob often says, the HostaLibrary is a product of hosta lovers around the
world. It is not one person's site, it belongs to everyone who contributes to
it and everyone who visits. This is your chance to take part in building the
HostaLibrary into an even better tool for us all, and to have some fun and get
more familiar with the hostas you see as you travel around looking at tags and
lists and plants.
We want clear, good quality photos of mature plants. No small immature or tiny
plants please. Please submit photos of plants with the detail you would want
to see if you were trying to identify a plant or the overall look of a mature
clump. Use the Email link at the contest page to send your photo attachments
to Bob. Please include in the subject line of the Email.CONTEST and the Hosta
Name you are entering. i.e. Subject: CONTEST ' Abby' .
Please only one entry per Email. Photo size should be around 500-600 pixels
wide and any height but under 50k in size.
Of the registered plants not at the Library there are 1057 !!!!!! So grab
your cameras and start clicking!
