<As a point in passing the exterior of an unopened bud of the iris near bloom here is as green as I have ever seen an iris bud.>

Same here Bill. I've been taking pictures of the buds of my iris this year. Interesting, they can almost be identified by the bud, not just by color, but also by form.
Pearl in zone 7b, just west of Ft Worth, Tx.
