Sharon, when you say "chipped", how are you doing that? And how are you storing your seeds to keep them viable?

This photo shows what happens at the end of the stratification-germination period. It's decision time. This was a 1/2-bred X 1/4-bred cross, for which 50% germination is remarkable because this type typically has a lot of non-viable seeds. Contents of the refrigerator dish have been dumped into a 9" square pan, for ease in digging the seeds out of the perlite.
Remember the label that indicated how many seeds were in the dish? Subtract the number of seeds that have germinated and been removed and you know how many to search for. When squeezed gently, the non-viable ones squish but the viable ones remain firm. These can be dried and stored for another year or chipped. By this point I was usually running out of room so chipped relatively few, but I have germinated seeds that have been through this treatment, stored for more than 10 years, then put through another stratification treatment.
