Hi Sandra,
Thank you for the nice photos, they're coming through great
for a first attempt. What your doing though is scanning a
8 1/2' X 11" page, when all we need is just the photo scanned.
On your scanner it should preview the scan first, then
you should be able to form a box or select just the area
around the picture that you want to scan.
Or if you scan the whole page and save it, you'll need to use
your photo program to select or crop the picture from the background.
To do this, you should have a Rectangular Selection Tool that is used
to draw a box around picture, then copy just that area and paste to
a new clipboard, or find Automatic Crop to keep just the picture area.
Then just save the picture area. 
Anyway they're good quality photos, just large at 100%.
Maybe someone else can explain this process in better or simpler terms.
