In most turtles you can tell the sex by their abdomen.  The males are slightly concave, whereas the females are flat.

The turtle who was pictured...someone found in their yard     it is an EASTERN box turtle and it looks like a girl.  Males have VERY red eyes.............
It's not an ornate.  This info comes from a lady I know rescues turtles & tortises.
