<Wasn't there some kind of product out that could be used to dip tool 
<handles to preserve them? Maybe that would work to prevent rust. It came
<in some wild colors so no one else could forget they were your tools. It
<formed a plastic like coating. 


It's called Dip-It; Home Despot sells it in about four colors; I use it to
coat lengths of metal strapping tape to make corset boning for historical
costumes. In that application, it holds up for over a year.
