Linda Mann asked:
: Why would anyone want to have a flower that smells like a skunk? My dog
: would take it out and bury it! Does CAPITOLA have redeeming features?
The fragrance is certainly not pleasant, but at least it's quite weak. Weak
enough to be undetectable at the distance appropriate for collecting pollen.
You really have to get your nose into the flower itself to wish that you hadn't!
But, YES! It has redeeming features -- namely fertility. It came along at a
time when people had been struggling for decades to get fertile arilbreds.
Suddenly, anyone with CAPITOLA & a TB or two could produce nice quarterbreds --
and if you look at the Checklists from the late forties, even into the early
eighties, you'll see that a lot of people did.
