Re:Iris unguicularis "Walter Butt"

Ian Black asks...

>and does anyone know who Mary Barnard was??

As the iris was named by Edward B. Anderson, V.M.H.
                         The Old Schoolhouse
                         Lower Slaughter, Cheltenham
                         Gloucestershire, UK
and was collected in Algeria by Barnard (Male or female unspecified --
wife?) a check with Anderson's relatives may turn up some information as to
just who Mary was/is. A check of the membership records of the British Iris
Society does not show a Mary Barnard as a member during a 20 year window
centering on 1962. There was a T.T. Barnard from Furzebrook, Wareham who
was a BIS member in 1962 and may well have been the person who collected
the specimen.

As a point of interest, Mary Barnard has never been introduced to commerce
although it has obviously been in trade for some time.

Best regards,
