AR: Important Book Now Available

From: HIPSource@aol.com

Greetings.

Dorothy Stiefel, HIPS Publications Chairman, has just announced the
availability forpurchase of a document which all those interested in aril and
arilbred irises of any age will find of enormous interest. I am speaking to
ensure even wider exposure for the announcement by submitting it to the list
under the alternate subject header.

This document is a Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Irises which
represents literally years of research by the AIS Registrar and Sharon
McAllister. The operative word in the title is Comprehensive, and it should
be understood that this book is unique and exhaustive in scope and intended
to provide information not available elsewhere. Nor is the data limited to
historic cultivars, for it includes material current to the mid 1990s.

This is a major publishing endeavor for HIPS, and the work is available in
limited quantities. Because of the size of the book--nearly 200 pages--it is
by no means a foregone conclusion that HIPS will be able make it available
forever, indeed we benefited greatly this time from a fortuitous cost
calculation error on the part of the printer; the sales price reflects this.

Those who want a copy are encouraged to contact Dorothy immediately. For your
convenience I am including the full text of her post below.

Put me down for one, Dorothy. The check is coming your way.

Now there is one less available.....

------------------Initial Announcement Follows--------------

JUST in time for the holidays. This information-packed book (196 p. plus
several appendices), compiled by Kay Nelson Kepple and Sharon McAllister, is
available from:

Dorothy Stiefel
HIPS Publications Sales Chair
312 Dryden-Harford Rd.
Dryden, NY 13053
for the sum of $20.00 (includes postage). Checks should be made out to HIPS
(or Historic Iris Preservation Society)

Just what is it all about, you ask. From the introduction:

"This book is a new approach to Checklists. It draws on information about
arils and arilbreds from many different sources and presents it in a single,
comprehensive volume and in convenient alphabetical form --without
sacrificing the precision of the original sources. It includes cultivars
that qualified as arils and arilbreds under all classification systems used
by AIS or ASI over the years......"

You may remember the query about the iris STRIPED BUTTERFLY a few weeks ago
on this list. It is listed as a TB in the AIS checklist, and it does not
appear in the Aril Society International checklist, as it no longer
"qualifies" under present rules.

Here is the very informative entry from McAllister's Comprehensive Checklist:

STRIPED BUTTERFLY DIS (Luella Noyd, R. 1956). Sdlg N5-34. TB, 34", M.
"Butterfly Wings" x Cahokia. Light blue self, falls veined darker
violet-blue; yellow beard; small area of olive-ochre at haft. Noyd, 1958.
Notes: 1/8 onco, qualified as an arilbred until the quantum requirement was
adopted. Ref: AIS '59, p.188.

Just a sample of the nuggets of aril lore found in these pages. A very
useful and important contribution to iris literature, and HIPS is pleased and
honored to distribute it. Thank you, Sharon!
