"...Horticultural societies have been operating for many years... garden
clubs are a more recent phenomenon becoming popular in the 1950's and
reaching their peak through the 60's and 70's. Many garden clubs and
societies were formed, or had their numbers swelled, by post World War
II adults who were looking for camaraderie and companionship. The 50's
was a society of club-orientated people and there was a considerable
growth in women's clubs, workingmen's clubs, travel clubs, etc. Many of
these groups have since faded or
ceased operating. "
So perhaps more relevant information on AIS membership would be to look
at longer term trends - pre 1950's to present. Anybody know what the
membership was in 1940 and 1950?
He says there has been a 70% decline in membership in "a number of"
garden groups over the past 10 yrs (not sure whether that's New Zealand
or world wide).
Also ran across a website for a scientific society for insect
researchers. Their membership had declined about 35% in 5 yrs, compared
to the Ecological Society, which had only declined 14%. They attributed
the difference in part to greater web access to information in the
insect society - why join the society if the information is free on the
