Carole, you are right to use the tag "HIST."  The blacklist is long gone.  If
I understand the history of the AIS rightly this dated from the 1920's-1930's
and was dropped fairly quickly, probably for the very reasons you make clear
in your comments about 'Gracchus.' I have no idea why the list was ever
started.  I don't remember running across any active reference to the list in
the *Bulletin* copies I've read from the 1930's and 1940's, although there may
have been references made.  If there were, they certainly didn't stick in my

I think there may be a reference or two in TWOI, but for the moment I can't
search that out.

Please note that this certainly is not my specialty, so I am speaking from
just a smattering of knowledge.  I hope someone who *does* know the history
involved will step in and give you a better answer.  Enough time has gone by
since you posted this question to suggest that the ones who do know are either
off line for the moment or just haven't caught up with their mail.
