I added this information to the Iris Encyclopedia. but the type of fragrance has not been specified. Bote for all of you that wish checklists contained these types of comments remember you can add them to the entries in the Iris Encyclopedia. It is what you make of it.

And 'Eleanor Roosevelt', (1933 H. P. Sass-McDade, R. ) of which there is a
huge planting at the entrance to Rainbow Iris Farm in Bedford, IA. One of
the earliest and you can smell it before you even get to the long driveway!
Listed in their catalog for $3.25 -

from HIPS website but doesn't mention fragrance!

>From the Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1937: "Deep flourite purple self,
with very rich falls. The opening flower is almost black, and the heavy blue
beard tends to increase the depth of color. This is the leading
fall-blooming iris in commerce today, because it increases very fast, is most reliable
in flowering habit, and is one of the most beautiful irises in the garden
regardless of its added value as a rebloomer."

Yes, I. pallida smells like grape soda,
and many of its descendants do as well.
One exception is I. pallida dalmatica.
