{"id":102,"date":"2013-10-31T13:54:53","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T18:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2014-12-05T16:08:36","modified_gmt":"2014-12-05T21:08:36","slug":"2013-fall-plant-orders-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/31\/2013-fall-plant-orders-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 fall plant orders, part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_136\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164345-e1383321731666.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136\" class=\" wp-image-136      \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"woodlanders plants\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164345-e1383321731666-225x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164345-e1383321731666-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164345-e1383321731666-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Half of the plants from the order<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I used to order plants via mail fairly frequently, but because of time and monetary constraints I slacked off for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Until this fall. \u00a0It all started when I was looking for a replacement for my beloved <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/gallery\/view\/thy\/dirpa\" target=\"_blank\">Dirca palustris<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>which had been broken by some careless tree trimmers who worked for the power company. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t actually kill it, but they broke it in half and opened up a perfect space underneath for my dog, Romeo. \u00a0On hot summer days Romeo would dig deep and curl into the exposed roots to keep himself cool. \u00a0However, I love Romeo and hate the tree trimmers, so I&#8217;m giving the tree trimmers full blame.<\/p>\n<p>The original plant came from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodlanders.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Woodlanders<\/a> nursery in 2003, but their recent catalogs didn&#8217;t list leatherwood any more. \u00a0Until this fall, that is. \u00a0I was so excited to finally have a source again, but shipping was going to be expensive. \u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;d better order more plants since I have to pay pretty much the same shipping rate anyhow,&#8221; I rationalized.<\/p>\n<p>I think every gardener who orders via mail has gone through this process to satisfy their plant lust. \u00a0There should be a support group.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow I justified my way to twelve different items. \u00a0I upped the quantity to five for two of the plants, giving me twenty plants total:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/gallery\/view\/thy\/dirpa\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dirca palustris<\/em><\/a> (to replace the murdered one)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Stewartia koreana<\/em> (I&#8217;ve always wanted one)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/gallery\/view\/dry\/athfffm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Athyrium felix-femina<\/em>\u00a0var. felix-femina &#8216;Minutissimum&#8217;<\/a> (I have some of these ferns from Woodlanders and they&#8217;re great. \u00a0They stay 6&#8243; high and are awesome with miniature hosta)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Clethra fargesii<\/em> (why not? \u00a0It sounds interesting)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Clethra barbinervis<\/em> (after hearing Dan Hinkley praise this plant so extensively, I had to try it in my own garden)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Salvia koyamae<\/em> (I grew this with great success for several years, until the one year that <em>Aegopodium<\/em> made its way to that bed and strangled the poor <em>Salvia<\/em> in the night)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Zenobia pulverulenta<\/em> &#8216;Woodlanders Blue&#8217; (I tried this in 2003, but killed it pretty quickly. \u00a0I wanted to have another shot)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Franklinia alatamaha<\/em> (I have always wanted to try this plant because of its rich and fascinating history)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/gallery\/view\/lil\/hosyi\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hosta yingeri<\/em><\/a> (Mine from 2003 is flourishing, but lonely; I ordered five friends)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Oxydendrum arboreum<\/em> (Another interesting plant that I really should be growing. \u00a0The only one in town was cut down)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Viburnum acerifolium<\/em> (Another 2003 plant that was getting lonely; it now has a friend to shout across the garden to)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Viburnum sieboldii<\/em> &#8216;Seneca&#8217; (I don&#8217;t know why. \u00a0I got caught up in ordering, I think)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_137\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164359.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137    \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Woodlanders plants\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164359-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164359-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hort.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131024_164359-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The other half of the order, mostly perennials.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have places in mind for many of these, but not all. \u00a0My eyes were bigger than my stomach. \u00a0I mean yard.<\/p>\n<p>So what am I going to do with them? \u00a0Since the plants came from South Carolina (which is considerably warmer than East Central Illinois), I hardened the plants in the garage at night and left them outside during the day. \u00a0Because it&#8217;s so late in the season I may not get a well-established root system before winter, so I&#8217;ll add a heavy layer of mulch after planting these bareroot beauties to help protect against frost heaving.<\/p>\n<p>Once I figure out where they go, that is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to order plants via mail fairly frequently, but because of time and monetary constraints I slacked off for a while.
