Titan Watch 4/28/2001
Here is a Saturday update right from the middle of Fairchild's one day
Spring Sale. What a busy day. Barbara Hoshizaki was here autographing copies
of her newly released revision and expansion (15 years in the making) of the
famous Fern Growers Manual.
The Amorphophallus titanum in the Conservatory has reached 28 inches tall,
the spadix is now visible, and the scape bract has loosened enough from the
inflorescence that the folded spathe is partly visible from one side.
It was 6/6/98 when the Titan was last discovered to be coming into bloom. It
was 18" tall at the point when the spadix was visible for the first time. It
was 18 days later, on 6/24/1998 that it opened. It had reached 59.5 inches
This years inflorescence had the spadix first visible on Friday, April 27,
2001. It was 26 inches tall at that point. If this blooming progresses at
the same rate as that of 1998, I expect it to open around May 14th to 16th.
If, by the same most likely faulty reasoning, it increases the height by the
same percentage, it could possible be over 7 foot tall.
