hi steve,
i haven't seen epiphyllums in the wild, but i can tell
you that related "epiphytical" cacti do grow over
rocks in full sun, and not necessarily in a shady
rainforest.
i have seen Rhipsalis in brazil grow under different
conditions, i.e., the same species (R. cruciforme) can
grow in full sun and in shady conditions, and of
course, their forms vary under these conditions.
