Re: Jessica

Amazing, what a coincidence! I lived in La Maddalena, a little archipelago between Corse & Sardegna for 2 years almost 20 years ago (I can’t believe it has been that long!!). It became my soul home & I miss it terribly. I am grateful that my climate here in Georgia allows me to grow many of the plants I loved in the Med region, for nostalgia if nothing else!

I would love to see pictures of your area & the aroids you get to live amongst sometime if you have the time to share!

I’m still very “new to aroids” so it has been fun to learn that many of my favorite plants are in fact aroids & I was just unaware of the botany! I love the epiphytes & hemi-epiphytes the most, I love their adaptation to surviving in trees. It fascinates me! My favorite genus is Monstera; like many people drawn to the genus the fenestrated leaves most species produce are just endlessly fascinating as well. I love watching how much they change in appearance from juvenile form to maturity. Right now I have 18 different Monstera species in my collection, as well as different varieties within some of those species, & I search for new ones as if I could collect them all! I do have a lot of other aroids, anthuriums, zantesdeschia, epipremnum, aglaonema, alocasias, colocasias, calatheas, philodendrons, etc. While the monsters are my favorite genus, I do love many others!

How about you, where does your interest lie in aroids? Are you a collector or do you also work in the field for your profession?

Hi Jessica,

Yes jasmine can be exquisitely odoriferous !

Yes I’m living on Corsica , a French hotspot for temperate Aroids!!!

You are right there is a Ferry between Corsica and Sardinia, now a new line is open directly from Ajaccio to Porto Torres!

What aroids are you more interested in?

Best,

Marc

Merci Marc! So wonderful to hear from you & “meet you,” I look forward to all that lies ahead! My French is very very minimal but I have spent time there & loved it. I just received a plant of French perfume jasmine in the mail 3 days ago for a section of garden I’ve started working on that I have dubbed “la parfumerie” for all my sweetest smelling selections! I really look forward to the international connections here because travel is my other passion :) Thank you for the warm welcome—& that sounds exciting about the newsletter! Wow, I feel honored! Best wishes to you!

Ps—I see Corse mentioned in your email address, do you live on Corsica? I used to take the ferry over to Bonifacio from La Maddalena often!

Good morning all!

Since there’s a thread going, & I hope this is not inappropriate, I thought I would just drop in really quick to say hi, my name is Jess Holbrook, & I’m a new member of IAS this year. It’s great to see some conversation! I’m really looking forward to learning a lot, meeting some people, & finding ways that I can help/get involved. So thank you for having me!

Tom, I have been learning about your work so despite my new-ness I agree a well deserved recognition! Congratulations to you!

Best wishes all, I look forward to whatever may come next!

:) Jess

Aroiders,

I'm forwarding a message from Tom that the listserver rejected because it had too many recipients. I'm emphasizing this primarily so that everyone will know that if you try to reply personally, it will go to me rather than Tom. I'll let you know and/or forward it on to Tom, but that may take hours or overnight. (If you reply to the list, then of course everyone, including Tom, will see it.)

Dear Aroiders:

Since the attached article deals a lot with my work with Araceae I wanted to share it with you. I know that many of you might not subscribe to Systematic Botany. The article by John Pruski and Guy Nesom attempts to justify their nomination of me for the Asa Gray Award, one that I received in Alaska in August during the Botany 2023 meetings there.

Best wishes,

Tom
