Re: hair mats

I have to admit that we've been using the hair mats for 1 year on our
small palm trees in 6" and 10" pots. They are not fool proof and some
weeds can still germinate through the mat. The trouble with palms is
that the plant itself with its leaves whorled about a center tall stem
creates a funnell effect and draws air born seed straight down to the
base where they sneak in between the mat and the trunk. So they still
require a person to walk down the aisles and rouge out the weedies.

The araceous tropical foliage plants do not require mats as they out
grown and cover the surface of soil before weed seeds can fall in.
