Aroiders-

A couple of months ago I mentioned that I would like to make a calendar with Aroid photos, to benefit the IAS.  I am calling on all of you to submit photos for the 2012 calendar.

Official Rules

1.     A person can submit as many photos as they would like.

2.     There may be more than one photo by a photographer chosen.

3.     Photographers/submitters do not have to be members of the International Aroid Society.  Feel free to pass the entry information on to anyone that might be interested.

4.     Photographs do not have to have been taken during the last year.

5.     Photographs should be submitted in the largest available size.  Dimensions should be no less than 1000 pixels in each direction.

6.     A committee of judges will select the 13 (one for each month plus the cover) best photos (or sets of photos) to be included in the calendar.  The primary criteria are the image quality and a cumulative representation from a variety of different genera.

7.     Photos must be submitted by the photographer.  By submitting a photo, the photographer is granting permission to publish the photo in a calendar which will be sold for profit – to benefit the International Aroid Society.  Photographers will be identified in the calendar with the chosen photographs.

8.     Photos should be submitted with the following information included in the email text:

·         Location of plant (city, state, country, institution or any other relevant information)

·         Ownership of plant (if known)

·         Date of picture (specify as best known if multiple)

·         Photographer’s full name

·         Name of plant (genus and species, as best known)

·         Any other interesting details about this plant.

9.     Photos and the accompanying information should be sent to Zach DuFran (zach@zachandchristie.com).  Please DO NOT send your pictures to the aroid-l discussion list, as the size of the attachments will be burdensome to many members.

10.  Submissions will be accepted until July 31, 2011.

11.  Photographers who have their photos chosen for the calendar will receive a free calendar as a gift of appreciation.

Ideas/Suggestions

1.     Photos can consist of the entire plant or plant details (stem, cataphylls, inflorescence, infructescence, texture close-ups, etc).  You may also submit a collection of pictures of the same plant that could be grouped for one month.

2.     It is preferred that photos do not contain people, unless it is particularly advantageous (i.e, for size comparison or something similar).

3.     The calendar should be informative as well as appealing to the eye.  Consider photographing plants that are less common.  Also consider the composition of the shot (background/foreground, lighting, color range).

Calendars will be available for purchase in the Fall and in person at the IAS Show and Sale in Miami this September.

If you have any questions about this project, please send them my way.

Thank you in advance to all who submit photos-

Zach DuFran
