Jonathans post gave me an idea- there are formulas on the web for making
"artificial rock", maybe you can adapt one to make a tree?!

Ach, these aren't the greatest links. Somewhere I "saved" a recipe someone
posted on a plant list.
There is also something called Tufa?? or Hypertufa. Look at

Anyhow, just ideas. If I find a recipe I might try to make some next
