On page 428 of Dr. Croat's Annal's of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 84, #3 Tom writes it is a epiphytic climber that occurs high in the canopy.  I'd say it prefers to climb!

My davidsonii has been creeping along quite nicely.  It is about to outgrow a 20" pot and I've heard it will climb if given something to do it on.  The question is would it prefer to climb?
