It will climb quite well, but as to whether it prefers to climb or crawl accross the ground I can not tell you. I took a piece of mine and placed it against the trunk of a medium sized live oak tree (1 foot diameter). It enveloped the trunk of the tree making numerous divisions of itself up to about 6 feet off the ground. I do not know if it is still going strong as I sold that house and downsized to a smaller home 3 years ago.

My davidsonii has been creeping along quite nicely. It is about to outgrow a 20" pot and I've heard it will climb if given something to do it on. The question is would it prefer to climb?
