I first met Alan at a party held at his home in Raleigh, in conjunction 
with an IAS event, many years ago. He handed out seedling Rohdea 
japonica plants as party favors, and the one I got is still growing in 
my yard today, the first of a number of plants given me by Alan over the 
years. Alan also played a major role in Aroid-L, allowing us to host the 
list at NCSU for several years.
