Well ... most of the breeders I know, who are mostly orchid breeders, use that convention - pod (seed) parent first, then pollen parent. And they all believe that the direction matters, often significantly, and some of them routinely try to make their crosses in both directions to see which they think is superior.
But not everyone does. And the ICN in Appendix I that talks about hybrid naming has this to say: "H.2A.1. It is usually preferable to place the names or epithets in a [hybrid] formula in alphabetical order. The direction of a cross may be indicated by including the sexual symbols ({o+}: female;{o!}: male) in the formula, or by placing the female parent first. If a non-alphabetical sequence is used, its basis should be clearly indicated."
However, that's a "recommendation", rather than a hard and fast rule.

It's backward to me because in dogs it's dog x bitch. The x stands for "out of".--
