Cocoyam (Taro) die-off in Dominican Republic?

I am currently in the Dominican Republic, working on my future homestead. My contact here told me that there used to be a lot of cocoyam -- i.e. Colocasia esculenta -- in the area, but a few years ago it all disappeared, died off. I do not see any rerence to this in my google search under "taro die off Dominican Republic" and I am wondering is anyone knows any more about this, whether it was a disease, or an insect outbreak, or what, and whether there are resistant varieties available. Thank you.
