Les, You can ask Glasshouse Works to write: LIVE PLANT CALL FOR PICK-UP AT POST OFFICE. on the box. It's done with live chicks all the time....b.f.n...deb/AL
I am a postmaster's daughter. i know that no matter what you write on the box, if you ship something from here to there and it is the coldest winter on record and the mail probably goes to Chicago on the way, it will sit in a truck outdoors until the plants are dead like frozen lettuce. the mail may go to Chicago on the way even if Chicago is a big detour. (Chicago has very cruel winters)
I used to find the weather a most limiting factor when i was shipping plants, and when i resume shipping plants, i am going to find it limiting again.
unfortunately it is not legal to label the plants LIVE CHICKS.
It also matters where you are on your local carrier's mail run, or the UPS unheated truck run.
yes. sometimes you get lucky, but i never would count on it.

ps heat will kill plants in shipment faster than cold
