Greetings all,
A question for indoor growers: Of all the aroids you've grown, which have been the most pest-resistant (besides Epipremnum aureum)? I'm a novice indoor grower in the northern hemisphere (35*N) growing under natural and artificial light, typical household humidity, and I find that some plants are pest magnets, while others nearby are unbothered. My three big nemeses are mealybugs, spider mites, and thrips. Some examples from my experience:
- Pest-prone:
- adreanum-type Anthuriums: Easily overrun by spider mites in winter, and thrips seem to be a continuing issue. Mealybugs seem uninterested, however.
- Aglaonema: White Rain and Maria - easy targets for mealybugs, which multiply rapidly. Tigress hasn't had nearly the same problems. The other pests appear to be a non-issue.
- Less pest-prone:
- Monstera adansonii seems largely unbothered.
- Philodendron: Mass-produced cultivars Rojo Congo, Prince of Orange, and Red Prince are mostly untouched.
- Syngonium podophyllum: While I've definitely seen some infestation by each of the unholy trinity, the plants don't seem to get overrun with pests, ever. I've only tried two cultivars so far, however.
- bird's nest Anthuriums: This is a mixed bag for me. My Big Red Bird is massive and pest-free. Superbum was wrecked by thrips (?). A couple "hookeri" hybrdis seemed pest-free for a year, but then may have suffered significant thrips damage (or some random foliar disease? dunno).
I know that some of these issues could be resolved by 1) using pesticides regularly, 2) washing the leaves in the shower, or 3) getting a humidifier. But I'm currently aiming for maximally-low-intervention cultivation, having already spent many years growing high-intervention plants (i.e., Nepenthes).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Best regards,
Nicholas
