It's a nice book, but not exactly my cup of tea. While I realize that the
community gardener/urban pioneer may enter the American pantheon of folk
heroes, alongside of the cowboy, at some juncture, how-to "cookbooks" work
best for me.
Understand, that I like the Garrison Keilor moment as much as the next guy
(and have been found guilty of having "Keiloresqe" moments in my writing)
but if I hugged some 82 year old lady in my garden while she was hovering
over her Swiss Chard, she'd probably deck me with a trowel!
Also, as someone who has been known to use a pitchfork to encourage the
sexworkers ( aka, garden hoes) who ply their trade on our garden's side
street to mosey along, before the Mommies and kids show to work on the
children's plot, I vote for reality-based community gardening books, at
least for grown-ups.

did you like Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman? it's not a "how to" but it makes
the gardeners so lovable, fictitious though they be. how many other
community garden books make you feel all sappy and want to run out and hug

The best written, one volume treatment of community gardening remains,
Jobb, J. (1979). The Complete Book of Community Gardening. New York:
William Morrow and Co. Every time I get the bug to write one, I just pick
Jobb's book and realize that even after 23 years, it's hard to beat for
historical context and down to earth, practical advice. Because this book is
so good, it's usually missing from most public libraries (i.e., "Steal this
Book!" ) I obtained my copy from Amazon.
Another fine cg book that you'll find missing from your in local library is
A Handbook of Community Gardening

Lucky for you, I'm doing my thesis on community gardening. Here's some of
the books that I could get a hold of. Some of them are out of print but a
library may have them. Also check Urban Agricultural Notes, city farmer web
site's listing of resources:

The general guides are listed towards the bottom. And though I don't like
buying from amazon.com, they do have a good search engine, listing out of
print books, as well as in-print ones. Sometimes you have to be very
specific with my library's search, so I do a search on amazon and then copy
and paste the isbn number from amazon's page into the search on my
library's--a very quick and easy way to find a specific book.

I just received funding tobuild a community garden at my school and I have a
few questions.
1. Is their a good resource book for design the layout of a community
garden/ or do I just have to peice one together using 3-4 books? (one on
irrigation, one on plants, one on raised beds, one on fence building)?
2. anyone have estimated cubic yards of compost for each 1000 sqft of new
beds? I am working on old compacted soil of slightly on the clay side of the
soil spectrum.
