Internship (with Stipend)
Horticultural Therapy and Community Outreach
Brooklyn GreenBridge, Brooklyn Botanic Garden
This one year internship begins February 2004 as part of Brooklyn
GreenBridge, the community horticulture program of Brooklyn Botanic
Garden. The intern will concentrate on a project working with children
with special needs, skills, abilities and disabilities in two distinct
sites. It will also include working with our general horticultural
therapy network which includes geriatric care, mental health programs,
homeless shelters, etc. The intern will also have some general
responsibilities for community horticulture activities and be part of
our community outreach program throughout Brooklyn.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Work with the Brooklyn GreenBridge staff to develop curriculum,
train teachers and work directly with pre-school children who are
severely disabled at their school; also work with a public library in
developing more informal gardening activities for elementary school age
children with special needs.
* Provide support for a GreenBridge network of social service
institutions in Brooklyn seeking to develop horticulture therapy
programs.
* Participate in GreenBridge team of staff and volunteers in
various community horticulture programs.
* Performs related duties and/or special projects
Qualifications:
* Prior experience and/or training in horticulture; at least two
years of college preferred
* Prior experience or education in early childhood education.
* Experience/training in working with people with disabilities a
plus
* Must be considering horticulture as a vocation and have
particular interest/training in horticulture therapy
* Must be able to meet the challenges of urban gardening
* Strong interpersonal skills. Able to work alone or in a team
* Good communication skills and ability to converse with a variety
of constituencies
* Bi-lingual helpful (Spanish and English)
* Computer skills helpful
* Drivers license necessary
* Some evening and weekend work require
A stipend is available. Although housing is not provided, suggestions
for locating accommodations in NYC neighborhoods are available.
