Position Announcement

Virginia Cooperative Extension is seeking applications for the position listed below. This is a restricted professional faculty position at the rank of Lecturer. The position will be renewed annually, contingent upon the availability of funds.

VCE State Master Gardener (MG) Coordinator, Position 111944, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia.

Responsibilities:
The VCE State Master Gardener (MG) Coordinator is responsible for providing statewide leadership and training for the local VCE-MG Coordinators in managing the VCE-MG volunteers who conduct VCE horticultural education programs. The person in this position will assist in the establishment of new VCE Master Gardener programs in unit offices and provide consulting to established programs as new volunteer coordinators assume their jobs. Assess the need for and develop new management tools; responsible for supplying local coordinators with statewide resources (handbooks, pins, certificates); conduct training sessions for VCE-MG Coordinators; and, be responsible for record keeping and reporting on VCE-MG management. Prepare grant proposals and implement awarded grants; co-author journals. Responsible
for the annual state VCE-MG College and bi-monthly VCE-MG Leadership Development Newsletter.

Qualifications:
Required essential skills and knowledge include: organization management, volunteer management,
written and oral communication, negotiation and consensus building, the ability to organize and manage events, record keeping, and newsletter production. Computer applications and software ability (Frequently used programs are Access, Excel, PowerPoint, PageMaker, and MSWord or Word Perfect for Windows); web site creation and maintenance; and, use of other office equipment such as scanners. Overnight and
day travel required.

Desirable skills and knowledge include the understanding of horticulture and sustainable landscape management, and knowledge of Cooperative Extension, its educational mission and the role of VCE-MG
in supporting the mission. A Masters is desirable.
