Zone 5 plants for front of house

Dear sir and/or  ma'am,
      I could use some advise. Planning a garden that will be one fourth
of a circle (actually one garden for each side of the front  of  the
house). It measures 12 ft  by 12 ft going across the front of the house
and down the sides of the porch,house faces west. Each garden has a large
window 52 in w by 60 in tall  facing it.. Can I plant something that will
have 4 season color and shade the windows in summer?The house is a center
hall colonial,newly pained yellow with green shutters.We live in zone 5.
