Now Hiring: Americorps*VISTA Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator
Wasatch Community Gardens is a non-profit organization serving diverse
communities in the urban areas of Salt Lake County. Our mission is to help
people grow and share fresh produce; to teach urban youth responsibility,
cooperation and ecological awareness; and to be an active resource for
sustainable organic gardening.
The Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator position is through the
AmeriCorps*VISTA program. VISTAs mission is to increase the capacity of
low-income people to improve the conditions of their own lives. To
volunteer with VISTA is a commitment to national and community service. For

Hours:
40 hours/week, flexible schedule, typically Tuesdays Saturdays, 8am-5pm
and some evenings during growing season. Position starts in February 2006
and goes for one year, with the option to renew for a second year.
Responsibilities:
Volunteer Coordination
7 Work with staff to further develop the volunteer program.
7 Assist the Community Education Coordinator in coordinating an AmeriCorp
NCCC Team during 8 weeks.
7 Schedule and lead volunteer projects in the garden.
7 Recruit volunteers from universities, high schools, corporate and
community groups.
7 Assist with volunteer training.
Outreach and Community Relations
7 Foster linkages with the community to increase involvement and better meet
community needs.
7 Attend and present at community and civic meetings.
7 Keep accurate records and respond to inquiries from prospective gardeners,
volunteers and community members.
Other
7 Participate in staff work sessions in the gardens
7 Help with our annual Plant Sale, Tomato Sandwich Party and Fund Drive.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in a related field
Experienced in volunteer coordination and working with the public
Sincere desire and motivation to work with inner-city adults from a variety
of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
Ability and flexibility to handle various projects with strong
organizational skills
Strong interpersonal, networking, presentation and recruiting skills
Knowledge of sustainable gardening methods preferred - must be willing/able
to learn gardening skills quickly
Desire to foster organic gardening and sustainable food systems
Ability and desire to work outdoors and do physical garden labor
Proficiency with database and office software, especially Microsoft products
Good writing skills
Benefits of the VISTA position
Monthly stipend of $840.00, health coverage provided through AmeriCorps,
mileage reimbursement for work-related travel, and a $4,725.00 education
award or $1,200 stipend upon completion of service.
