  • Subject: [cg] Gorge Events!

Hello All,

Register now for the plant identification hike on Saturday, July 23 and read about other upcoming gorge happenings. All events are free of charge, but sign up beforehand with me at 651/222-2193 x16 or bstorey@fmr.org:

1. Plant Identification Hike at Oak Savanna Restoration Site
Saturday, July 23, 9:00 - 11:00am
Meet on West River Parkway at 36th Street in Minneapolis

Take part in a walking tour of the oak savanna and prairie plant communities in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. Led by conservation biologist Carolyn Carr, participants will explore a portion of the Mississippi River Gorge trails near 36th Street and West River Parkway.

You'll learn to identify some of the native and non-native species growing in this area and hear about local habitat restoration efforts that have helped enhance the ecological integrity of the Mississippi River Gorge.

2. Buckthorn Removal

Join the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards for buckthorn removal in Longfellow, Seward, and Macalester Groveland neighborhoods in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Buckthorn is an invasive woody species that degrades our local native plant communities and wildlife habitat. The rapidly spreading shrub is able to invade many different forest types, where it then crowds out native species such as young oaks and maples. Buckthorn is taking over high quality natural areas along the river gorge - right in your neighborhood! We'll pull small buckthorn seedlings by hand, and remove larger specimens using loppers and weed wrenches. Tools and gloves will be provided. Please wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy shoes.

Come out for one or more of these scheduled events:

Saturday, August 20, 9am - 12pm.
44th Street and West River Parkway in Minneapolis

Thursday, August 25, 6:30 - 8:00pm

Saturday, September 17, 9am - 12pm.
