I didn't see the reference to an article in The Nation (does anyone have that reference?), but for anyone interested in organic agriculture in Cuba, there is a DVD documentary called 'The Greening of Cuba' that is quite good. More information at:

Aside from The Nation article referenced elsewhere on this list, this is a terrific overview of what the Cubans have accomplished in terms of feeding themselves with small-scale local agriculture. I have a Canadian contact who will gladly tape it and provide copies.
