Background: The American Community Gardening Association (ACGA) convenes
its annual conference - including groups from Canada, Europe and the United
States -- to discuss community gardening and greening programs and to
exchange ideas on improving gardening and open space in urban settings. In
recognition of the important role community gardens and parks played in the
uniting and healing process for New Yorkers following the attack on 9/11,
the ACGA conference is returning to New York City after a 17-year hiatus.
The conference is co-chaired by City of New York Department of Parks &
Recreation's Greenthumb program and the New York Restoration Project. It is
hosted by a myriad of groups including: New Yorkers for Parks, a coalition
of civic, greening, recreation and economic development organizations that
serves as an independent watchdog for the people of New York and their
parks. Also by Battery Park City Parks Conservancy, Brooklyn Botanic Garden
- Brooklyn GreenBridge, Council on the Environment, Green Guerillas,
Horticulture Society of New York, New York Botanical Garden - Bronx Green
Up, Neighborhood Open Space Coalition, Municipal Art Society of New York and
Trust for Public Land.
