Hello All,
Here in Detroit someone has donated about a bizillion burlap coffee bags to our Garden Resource Program. (Sorry, i don't know who did it.) Anyway, many of us are using these as an underlay in our gardens, covering them with free wood chips, to make paths. They are a perfect width. One must overlap the bags or weeds tend to grow up between them; and, while they are not a perfect weed barrier, they are more durable than multiple layers of newspaper, easier to handle than cardboard, and less likely to tear than black plastic. Also, before they are used in the garden, they are great for sack races at your community picnics!
I have found this discussion to be very interesting and valuable. Thanks to everyone who has added something.
