pine tree pruning

I have about 9 pine trees that are about 12 - 18 ft tall, and are very close
together. I would like to thin them out. It the any special tactic or
limitations I should know about that is particular to pine trees? I am from
Buffalo New York, when would be the best time to do the pruning?
