Now Hiring: Americorps*VISTA Outreach and Development Assistant

Wasatch Community Gardens is a non-profit organization serving diverse
communities in the urban areas of Salt Lake County.  Our mission is to help
people grow and share fresh produce; to teach urban youth responsibility,
cooperation and ecological awareness; and to be an active resource for
sustainable organic gardening.

 The Americorps*VISTA Outreach and Development Coordinator will build
program capacity by increasing community awareness and involvement through
media and public relations and community events.  He or she will also focus
on strengthening and developing existing programs and new avenues for
service through grant research, writing and fundraising. This is a one year
position through the AmeriCorps*VISTA program, with the possibility of a
second year.  VISTAs mission is to increase the capacity of low-income
people to improve the conditions of their own lives. To volunteer with
VISTA is a commitment to national and community service.  For more

Hours:

40 hours/week, flexible schedule, typically Monday  Friday, 8am-5pm and
some evenings during growing season.
Responsibilities:

    * Outreach and Community Relations Foster linkages with the community to
increase involvement and better meet community needs
    * Create and develop informational materials on WCG
    * Create and distribute public service announcements
    * Write monthly e-newsletter to publicize opportunities
    * Attend community fairs and other outreach events
    * Update website with workshops and other program opportunities
    * Keep accurate records and respond to inquiries from prospective
gardeners, volunteers and community members
    * Participate in staff work sessions and lead volunteers in the gardens

    * Development Research funding opportunities and write grants
    * Research viability of new projects or community gardens
    * Assist in coordinating plant sale, volunteer banquet, and dinner
events

Qualifications:

    * Strong Writing skills
    * Proficiency with word processing software, MS Access, desktop and
website publishing
    * Experience with or desire for involvement in grant writing and
fundraising
    * Strong interpersonal skills and ability to present to public
    * Sincere interest in community building and sustainable food systems
    * Ability and flexibility to handle various projects with strong
organizational skills

Benefits of the VISTA position

Monthly stipend of $840.00, health coverage provided through AmeriCorps,
mileage reimbursement for work-related travel, and a $4,725.00 education
award or $1,200 stipend upon completion of service.  Pre-service orientation
for VISTA is included.  A relocation allowance may be available.
