ferns in childrens' story?

LADY FILMY FERN or The Voyage of the Window Box, by Thomas Hennell,
Illustrated by Edward Bawden. Published by Hamish Hamilton, London, 1980. The
surreal tale of Lady Filmy Fern, Mr. Virgin Cork and the Welsh Polypod. The
story was spun out in a continuous fashion in the early 1930's, in an old
house in the Essex village of Great Bardfield by its residents and visiting
friends, chief among them Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious - first as art
students and later with their wives; and Thomas Hennell who wrote the story
down while Bawden made the watercolour illustrations. The manuscript spent the
war years in the safety of the bottom of a well. When Hennell and Ravilious
did not return from the war the story became forgotten. Publication only
became possible when after the rediscovered illustrations were included in an
exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London in 1979, a typescript of the tale
was also found.

It seems that Lady Filmy Fern is a spider...
