An Apology and a Thank You!

  • Subject: [ferns] An Apology and a Thank You!

Hi Fern Folks!

First let me apologize for not being on-line when one
of our subscribers set up a vacation reply system on
his email account. This of course starts an infinite
loop of responses to the entire list for every message
he gets from the list...including his own!

I have unsubscribed the person so the loop should soon
be over! PHEW!

I was teaching from 3-10 PM EDT today and was
therefore unaware of the problem. So please accept my
apology for the excess mail you all received.

And now let me say thank you to Bob Needham who took
the initiative to call me at home to tell me about
it...I had just walked in from class and could have
gone straight to bed, making the nightmare worse for
everyone. But thanks to Bob's call I jumped on-line
and cut off the problem. Thank you, Bob!

As you know email does take some time to cycle, so we
might have a couple more pop ups, as "down" relays in
the internet network come back "up" but I think we are
very close to DONE with this.

Hopefully we have all learned to NEVER set up a
vacation response message until AFTER unsubscribing
from all email lists to which we belong. If you
wondered about how to do that, each message from ferns
comes with the instructions at the bottom of each

I would also ask that those of you who are going away
and let your emailbox fill up also unsubscribe. Once
your box is full, I get bounces from your server that
then fill up my box. I generally let those go for a
few days hoping you will get home and clear it
up...but in this case, the infinite loop multiplied
all of the vacation notices times about five for the
additional bounces. So it really does help to turn
off your subscription when you are going on vacation.

By the way, anything you miss while you are gone can
be viewed at our ferns archives at www.hort.net.

Best wishes for your summer,

ross (list-dad)
