I thought the first fronds were sterile?

Hi fern lovers, here are some pics of a frond of my unknown fern, that may be
a dryopteris.
Now, I was led to believe that the first fronds were sterile(I read it
somewhere) yet you can quite
clearly see 'c' shaped indusae on this frond.
Its quite small for a dryopteris too isnt it?
