I came home from shopping yesterday and there was a black snake sunning itself on the concrete driveway. First one I've seen this year. Glad it's around. We've also had a good sized rat snake hanging out here for the last few years, but I haven't seen it in awhile. They're handsome--the color of old gold.

Nope, no fleas, no ticks. No japanese beetles. Very few mosquitoes.
Enough june bugs, squash bugs, tomato hornworms, and thrips to keep me
vigilant in the garden. Snails and slugs out front - no doubt imported
from some nursery
- but I don't transfer material from the front yard to the back, and
they can't cross the distance (too dry) so they haven't made it into my
vegetable garden.
Plenty of toads and gopher snakes, but I like them. Saw my first
rattlesnake of the season the other night, but it was a long way from my
house. Whew.

A plus (there's at least one!) about living where I do is that there arenofleas. Too dry, I guess; haven't had to worry about fleas on the dogs &catsfor 20 years now. One concern I have is...whenSluggershowed up last year and caused so many fights, I had no intention oftakinghim in, I just wanted him neutered to reduce his agression. Then he wouldn't leave. (on my lap now) So he ended up getting everything. The initial everything is a lot more than $88. As I said, no one willdo just the parts I ask. We'll see. They do that around here periodically. Of course getting him there may be an issue if he's skittish about cars or crowds. We are havinga clinic astheycall it this weekend. It's the Spring Pet Fling and they're microchipping for $10 and rabies for $5. Usually they offer a big discount on all the other necessaries as well. I myself pay $80 a dog.....for their "5,000 mile" checkup each year. Ouch. If I find some extra money aftermysale I may see about at least getting him some flea protection. I'dliketoget him neutered, but it's not as easy as it used to be. My vet only neuters if he can do all the tests on him and it ends up costing about$200.The local clinic requires you to own it which means going through alltheshots and registering him with the city. But 6mo flea protection is$30.Kitty neIN, Z5 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jesse Bell" <silverhawk@flash.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 7:22 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Beans talkWell said, Zem. Woody is a pale-orange, longish-haired tabby the spends the winterinmyFlorida room. His owner died and her son turned him out.
