Theresa,
I use this cool velcro net thing that I bought from (** sorry I can't
remember where & I can't find it on the internet**) to put around the pump in my
pond. It helps prevent the large sized and medium sized debris from getting in
there. It's a rectangular piece of net (real small holes, like a screen),
with velcro on the edges. I place my pump inside it and press the velcro
together.
Maybe something like this would work for you. Or you could wrap cheesecloth
around it?
