I think killdeer are shorebirds that (wisely) decided to differentiate and adapt...

Donna, do you mean killdeer? They nest on the ground and exhibit the
behaviors you describe. We have them around here, too. I wonder how
they have survived - not one I have seen nesting has ever had babies
hatch.

In my yard, the only bird who normally nests on the
ground is the sand something, need more coffee to
remember the name... escapes me at the moment. It
nests in the pea gravel by my veggie garden. It is the
bird that pretends to be hurt when you go near the
nest, drawing you to it, rather than the babies...
kinds cool how it pretend to have a broken wing.

All of my trees have someone's nests too....
