Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Found!
I received this news update this morning from the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology. It began, "Remember this day. Because this is the day you learn
that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker lives!! ... You'll be hearing in
the news today that the Holy Grail of birding--the bird many feared to be
extinct--has at last been sighted by multiple observers and captured in a
brief segment of video footage. "
For decades, people have sought the Ivory-Billed, largest woodpecker in
North America. It has been considered to be near extinction. Some sightings
were made in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia from the middle of the 1800's
to the 30's and 40's. Extensive logging was believed to have caused their
demise.
First sighted in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas on
Feb. 11, 2004, a coalition of researchers has made extensive searches, and
15 sightings have been made since then, and recent videotape has confirmed
the bird.
