Caladiums are up; gardenias and confederate jasmine are blooming.
Jim, not many things make me miss Florida, but Confederate
Jasmine is one of them. I do love that vine. The house where
I grew up in the panhandle had a very large Confederate Jasmine
on a trellis beside the back porch door running across the back
of the house to the kitchen window. It was a handsome vine all
year long, but really splendid in the spring. It was always in bloom
for Mother's Day. The church I attended then always had baskets
of flowers at the church door that day. If your mother was alive, you
got a 'Dorothy Perkins' rose, and if she was dead you took a spray
of Confederate Jasmine. Since it has a sticky white sap, there
was always a damp cloth to wipe the tip before you pinned it on
so it wouldn't spot your clothing. I hadn't thought about that in
years. Thanks for reminding me, and enjoy your vine. I wish it
would grow here.
