Re: sunfarm
Actually, Kitty
We share some of the same difficulties only on perhaps a different
scale. I have minimum order problems myself.... Since I try to skim off only
the "good stuff" and then only for shade to some degree, it sure limits what
I order from each wholesaler. Some I have had to give up on entirely. My
best efforts are with the smaller growers if they can keep the quality up.
But, even some of the big boys have problems with consistent quality.
This year is even worse than last... energy costs have risen drastically
once more and the cost is passed on by not growing on the plants as much as
in the past. So you receive a dormant, smaller, plant to begin so that you
end up being the one who has to fire up the furnace and grow on the plugs
before they can be sold. Some have been backordered into May ... so not they
will not be able to be sold until fall.
And so it goes.... adapt or die... just like the plants

Yes Gene, I'm pretty much straight forward on ordering too. However, I
was naive to think this man and his nursery were what he said they were.
Compared to Munchkin, I have to be more patient and humble at times with
wholesalers as my little MG nursery often cannot meet minimum purchase
requirements. I learned after our first season that you have to order
well in advance with wholesalers to get what you want, so I place orders
in September for the next spring. But that doesn't work with Barry. He
wants to ship when he gets the order, probably because he'll lose it
somewhere on his desk. When I placed that order last fall, he said he
could supply those plants and gave me prices. Then come spring, he
changed everything. We may be little, humble, and willing to be patient,
but he's not worth the bother.

OH... *that* Sunfarm....
Did not make the connection. Thought it was Sunshine Farms for Barry
Glick.
I have ordered from his perhaps 3 times. Yes, he is a salesperson and
I have taken plants not originally on my list. Mostly I write and ask if
he has something available after a look on his web site. He can answer
yes or not....
No way I would go through all that to get an order. You are far more
patient than I ... or wanted a plant you could not find elsewhere, or as
cheap....
With me it is do you have it, how much is it and what size now, when
can you ship? Period.

I figured Gene would have heard of him and I know Chris had thought of
purchasing plants from him but hadn't gotten around to it. It took me a
few years to get him to sell to me and then it all fell apart.
Barry Glick runs Sunfarm. His plant list on the internet is impressive,
but it is just a facade. He doesn't have those plants. Then he makes a
big to-do about whether he'll allow you to buy from him. After you jump
through ridiculous hoops, you have to take 100 plants without knowing
what you're getting. So he sends mostly odds and ends you don't want,
still leading you to believe that someday he'll let you order the good
stuff. When he finally says yes, you write the order, THEN he tells you,
he doesn't have those plants. NOW he sends you a list of what he does
have, only the real list is actually in Barry's head (his words) and
that doesn't match up to what he really has. But you write a revised
order selected from his new list and send it months ahead to secure your
plants.
Hmmmm.....haven't received a confirmation...email Barry. He knows he
has your order somewhere, but he's working 90 hour weeks and can't find
anything on his desk, and blah blah blah. E-send a copy of order. He
doesn't have 1/2 the items and 1/2 of the other 1/2 is twice the $ he
quoted before. He talks fast, very fast, trying to get you to take this
and that that he's overstocked with, items you don't want. And, of
course, it's too late for him to ship when you need them anyway.
What a nightmare. Cancelled the order.

Chris, you are so lucky you didn't order from Sunfarm. Gene, did you
ever order from him?
