Kitty, interesting web site.  I can't imagine trenching all your roses.  The 
Minnesota Arboretum has a large rose garden display and they trench all theirs.
    I did have a potted rose standard for a number of years.  I overwintered 
it in attached garage.  I never felt like I knew how much watering I needed to 
do.  I tossed it a couple of summers ago when it didn't do well.
