When it wasn't raining this morning, I potted up some seedling lychee trees. These were in peat pots that I had placed on top of one of my vermiculite cutting boxes. The seedlings were about 3 to 4 inches tall and about as thick as a pine needle. Everyone of them, however, had sent a root through to bottom of the peat pot and into the vermiculite. All of them had tap roots at least 6 inches long.
